Who designed our national flag 2022

National Flag

Pre- leader of Indian nationalism during the British Raj
Every time we extend our National Flag on August 15 and January 26 for Independence Day and Republic Day independently.

Have we ever wondered who designed our National flag?

On August,1876 in Bhatlapenumarru, Madras Presidency, British India( moment’s Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh), Pingali Venkayya( or Venkaiah) was born into a Telegu Brahmin family.

In March 2021, we completed 100 times of our Tricolour. Pingali Venkayya a freedom fighter designed India ‘ s first public flag on March 31, 1921
Venkayya was educated at Cambridge and grew up to come a polymath- with interests in geology, husbandry, education and indeed in languages. In 1913, he gave a full length speech in Japanese in Bapatla which made him notorious as ‘ Japan Venkayya ’. Machilipatnam was also a big center for fishing and fabrics. His interest in probing cotton, especially a particular variety called Cambodia Cotton, gave him another surname ‘ Patti( cotton) Venkayya ’.

Pingali was also a Gandhian ideologist. He met Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa during the Alternate Boer War( 1899- 1902) when he was posted there as part of the British Indian Army. There an incident when the dogfaces had to laud the Union Jack( the British public flag), stayed in his mind. After returning to India, he devoted himself to the creation of a public flag for the country. In 1916, he indeed published a folder on flags of other nations, ‘ A National Flag for India ’, offering nearly thirty designs of what could make the Indian flag.

In hunt of a flag

Throughout all Congress sessions between 1918 and 1921, he relentlessly put forward the idea of having a public flag for India. He worked as a speaker at Andhra National College in Machilipatnam in those times. With the help of a fellow speaker, he continued his hunt to design India’s own flag.

PINGALI VENKAYYA

Venkayya met Gandhi in Vijayawada and presented a rudimentary design of the Swaraj Flag on a Khadi skirting. It comported of two red and green bands to symbolise Hindus and Muslims, independently the two major religious communities in the country at that time- and the charkha represented Swaraj

In March 1921, Mahatma Gandhi first proposed a need for a public flag at a meeting of Indian National Congress in Vijayawada( also Bezawada). Venkayya met Gandhi there at the Victoria Museum and presented a rudimentary design of the Swaraj Flag on a Khadi skirting. It comported of two red and green bands to symbolise Hindus and Muslims, independently the two major religious communities in the country at that time- and the charkha represented Swaraj. His sketch had given an name to India and its people. Design A vertical triband of India saffron, white, and India green; charged with a cortege blue wheel with 24 spokes in the centre .

The colours represented values rather than communities; saffron stood for frippery and selflessness, white for righteousness and peace, and green for strength and faith.

The Flag law of India

The Flag law of India, 2002, contains the rules and regulations, the do’s and don’ts about the operation of the public flag. It eventually allowed the citizens of India to hoist the flag over their homes, services and manufactories on any day and not just on public days as was the case before. The Flag law is divided into three corridor Part I contains a general description of the flag, Part II is devoted to the display of the flag by members of public, private associations, educational institutions, etc, and Part III is related to the display of the flag by central and state governments and their organisations and agencies.
